All-on-4 implants® is an excellent option for people looking for a permanent smile. They are increasing in popularity and are an ideal dental procedure for those who don’t want many implant posts or dentures. Dentures can often move around or need to be resized, resulting in frequent dental visits. All-on-4 provides patients with a same-day long-lasting smile. It can certainly be nerve-wracking to have a new procedure done, so we will address each step to be clear on expectations and how the process works.
Step one: dental exam
The first step to getting your implants is to get a dental exam and evaluation completed. At this point, you should discuss any concerns, discomforts, or specific things you may want. A treatment plan will be discussed with your dentist to meet all your needs appropriately. This step also includes imaging tools to look at your bone structure, density, and volume, since the implants will go into your jawbone.
Step two: preoperative stage
Before you go into surgery, your dentist will provide you with instructions on how to prepare. These may include brushing your teeth before your appointment, not smoking, or drinking a full day beforehand, transportation arrangements, anesthesia, and finances.
Typically, the procedure is completed in one day unless there are risks or additional steps that need to be taken. Most patients do wish to be sedated during the procedure, which may involve extra precautions or preparations. With anesthesia, you typically do not want to eat or drink 8 hours before your surgery. Make sure that you are wearing something comfortable and use the restroom beforehand.
Step three: surgery
During this stage, your dentist will begin placing the titanium implants in the correct locations. Usually, there are two posts or implants near the front and two near the back of the mouth. The denture is then attached to those locations to provide you with your desired smile. Stitches are sewn in, and it’s done!
Step four: recovery
Ensure you have a safety buddy to drive you home and watch over you as you recover. As the anesthesia wears off, you may still feel side effects and be a bit loopy. You should allow yourself a few days of recovery time. Usually, minimal pain is experienced; however, you can use some pain medications to alleviate this.
During recovery, eating appropriate foods is essential and consists of softer foods, such as oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce, or soups. You can expect to have some swelling.
Follow up with your dentist after your surgery to check up on your healing process. Each patient is different, and your dentist will be able to analyze your progress most efficiently. All-on-4 is a straightforward option for many patients, but as with any dental work, you should stay on top of your dental hygiene for health maintenance and avoid any long-term issues. You can expect most implants to last even decades with proper care. Before choosing All-on-4, talk with your dentist about any precautions or risks.
